Supplier profile for July – Nippy’s

Over the past 6 months the Australian Orange Juice market has struggled to keep up with domestic demand. Australian oranges that would normally end up in Australian made juices have been getting exported and has resulted in a shortage in the Australian market. Most (if not all) juice produced in Australia over the past 3 months or so has included some imported oranges.

It’s great to see our Aussie farmers are able to develop export markets when the opportunity’s there. Last year alone Australia exported approximately $335million of citrus!

With reduced supply comes increased cost of goods. However, rather than taking the easy way out and just increase the price of the juice we sell, I took a more holistic view and sought out suppliers who are vertically integrated into the Australian juice market. After an extensive review process, I have settled on Nippy’s juices.

Nippy’s ticks all the boxes.

  • Its’ family owned
  • It’s Australian
  • Nippy’s own the orchards
  • They grow the oranges
  • They own and operate the juicing and bottling facilities
  • They transport the product themselves

I trust you’ll love it. I know I do!

Out with the old and in with the new (more environmentally friendly)

One of my goals for financial year 2017/18 is to reduce the Elizabeth Andrews carbon footprint. Now this is easier said than done and there is no single “quick fix”. Over the coming 12 months I will methodically review every one of our business practices and seek to minimize our carbon footprint.

Last month I engaged with “Greenfleet” in a carbon offset program and I will progressively add vans to the program.

This month, I have looked at the disposable platters that we sometimes provide to clients in far flung locations. For some time now we have been using a white box with a gloss lining. Over the course of the coming month, these white disposable boxes will be phased out and replaced with a Matt “Kraft” style of fluted box that is decompostable.

Ideally, we would use a recyclable product however there is some conjecture about the safety of using recycled permeable packaging that has been contaminated by food waste.

While all this may sound like gobbledygook, by moving to the new more natural packaging, we will be adhering to all food safety requirements while at the same time reducing our impact on the environment – and that’s got to be a good thing!

Did You Know?

That “The Age” will shortly be running a story about Elizabeth Andrews and the way in which we have inadvertently been caught up in the “super-heated Melbourne property market” (quote from Jon Faine – ABC Radio).
